There's something magical about hearing the sizzle of a hot wok, learning new cooking techniques, and discovering ingredients you've never tasted before. This week at Create-a-Cook's Let's Wok & Roll Camp at Central Montco Technical High School, our junior chefs immersed themselves in the exciting flavors and techniques of Chinese, Thai, and Japanese-inspired cuisine while building confidence in the kitchen.

Under the guidance of Chef Shawn, campers explored the art of stir-frying, steaming, sautéing, and rolling while sharpening their knife skills, practicing kitchen safety, and learning how bold sauces and fresh ingredients come together to create unforgettable meals. Instructor Ava led our baking and pastry adventures, while Assistant Rylan and Camp Counselor Sophia encouraged campers every step of the way, creating a fun and supportive environment where everyone could learn, experiment, and grow.

Throughout the week, our junior chefs prepared an impressive lineup of savory dishes, including Chicken Lettuce Wraps with Sticky Rice and Peanut Sauce, Vegetable Fried Rice cooked in authentic woks, Chicken Stir Fry with Noodles, and our fun fusion favorite—the Wok & Roll Quesadilla served with a Yum Yum-inspired dipping sauce. One of the week's highlights was learning how to prepare fresh Summer Rolls, with Instructional Assistant Rylan leading the demonstration and guiding campers through each step of the rolling process. As campers mastered the technique, they gained confidence working with delicate rice paper wrappers while discovering that patience and practice are the keys to creating beautiful, fresh rolls. The baking and pastry kitchen was just as exciting as campers created Matcha White Chocolate Cookies, Coconut Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting, an Ube-Inspired Viral Dot Cake, and a fragrant Orange Loaf Cake with Honey and Thyme.

One of the most exciting parts of the week was introducing campers to ingredients and equipment they may have never used before. From cooking in traditional woks to experimenting with vibrant matcha and colorful ube, our junior chefs stepped outside their comfort zones and discovered how new flavors, techniques, and cultures can inspire creativity in the kitchen.

The learning didn't stop at the stovetop. We were honored to welcome Jaelen Toole, founder of Jaelen's Cheesecakes, as a special guest. Jaelen shared how he transformed his passion for baking into a thriving small business after selling his very first cheesecake in 2019. Today, his family-supported business offers more than ten cheesecake flavors and has grown to serve customers from Virginia to New York. His story showed campers that with dedication, creativity, and perseverance, a simple idea can grow into something extraordinary. More importantly, it reminded them that the skills they're developing in the kitchen today can become opportunities for tomorrow. Adding to the excitement, we also welcomed Leigh from PA Eats, who spent the afternoon experiencing camp alongside our junior chefs. Leigh observed campers in action, learned more about Create-a-Cook's mission, and captured the energy, teamwork, and enthusiasm that make our camps so special. We're excited to share the upcoming PA Eats feature with our Create-a-Cook families in the coming weeks, so keep an eye out! You can follow PA Eats on Instagram at @pa.eats.

As another unforgettable week came to a close, our junior chefs left with much more than delicious recipes to recreate at home. They built confidence, strengthened their kitchen skills, embraced new ingredients and cultures, and discovered that some of the best learning happens when you're willing to try something new.

Thank you to all of our amazing campers and families for making Let's Wok & Roll Camp at Central Montco Technical High School such a memorable experience. We can't wait to see what our junior chefs cook up next!
